Welcome Matt

Matt Williams will have to provide all his powers of motivation to turn Ulster's season

Best hoping to make Six Nations

Ulster's Rory Best is out for three weeks, but hopes to make start of Six Nations campaign.

Leicester City 1 Charlton Athletic 1: McCarthy makes most of outing against old mates

Without a win in four matches, Charlton have slipped to fifth in the Championship but Patrick McCarthy, whose last-minute goal salvaged a point at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday, believes Alan Pardew's side will be hard on the heels of the leaders West Bromwich Albion once their injured and suspended players return.

Leeds 20 Sale 34: Thomas too good for brave Leeds

Lee Thomas was Sale's star at Headingley yesterday, scoring a try either side of the break and kicking two conversions while deputising for the injured All Black Luke McAlister. Sale scored four tries for a bonus point; Leeds, with three tries, played extremely testing rugby but won nothing.

Saracens 19 Newcastle 22: Bell tolls for Saracens as high Noon strikes

Newcastle left Vicarage Road in a festive mood after taking their first away win in the Premiership for 13 months. A late try by Jamie Noon brought a thrilling match watched by 17,223 Saracens' highest crowd for 10 years to a pulsating conclusion.

Worcester 7 Harlequins 10: Richards’ Quins keep woeful Worcester in a spin towards the drop

When it comes to Christmas spirit, Dean Richards can be positively Dickensian. "A win's a win, I suppose," he muttered as his Harlequins side trudged across a sodden Sixways surface to thank the travelling support tucked away in a high corner of the main stand. Even though the Londoners had prevailed for the first time in nine attempts and there was a Cornish pasty going free in the interview room, the Great Shambling Bear was in no mood for a knees-up. Bah humbug!

Wasps 25 Bath 10: Dallaglio silent over England future

Wasps' dress code after matches is pinstriped suits, which gives some of their younger players the look of hopefuls attending a job interview in the City of London. The club captain, Lawrence Dallaglio, does things his own way, eschewing the jacket for a v-neck sweater which ironically makes him appear rather schoolboyish.

Gloucester 27 Bristol 0: Lloyd’s tries show Bristol to be out of their depth

As wild West Country derbies go, the sheriff had a pretty quiet time of it. Nobody shot up the saloon and there was no need of a posse as Bristol quietly left town. Perhaps the game has become too professional for the rip-roaring days of old, but this stand-off was curiously impersonal.

A late try by Jamie Noon brought a thrilling match watched by 17,223 ? Saracens' highest crowd for 10 years ? to a pulsating conclusion.
